It is always wise to research a country before traveling there. Before there was the internet, I advised people to speak to their travel agent to learn of another country’s customs, but now, thanks to computers, we can learn on our own and be fully prepared before our travels. Technically, he really didn’t have to. He was simply adhering to that country’s customs. I do understand your point, but this can be tricky if we bring our customs into another country as it may make it more difficult for their countrymen. Working on wait staff is different in the US from what it is in other countries so it’s a fine line to walk. Thank you for your input. Sherry

Understood, Sabi, but technically, he was correct, and when Americans do not adhere to the native customs, it can make things worse for the people of that country, so the question becomes: Do we do as the Romans do and uphold what is considered protocol for that country or . . . do we allow our customs to travel with us? It’s an interesting point to ponder.

My husband and I were in Europe last summer. We were familiar with the European customs on tipping. There were times we would leave additional tips but not always. If Mark Zuckerberg was not rich or famous we would not have

Actually, I feel that Mark Zuckerberg, with his expertise and statue representing an American citizen should have left a customary tip of Americans to show etiquette to his waitress,as respect for his service.
